C60 has been used as an engine oil additive for some years and through this people were coming in contact with it. To test the safety of long term exposure to C60, a Paris University based research team looked at its potential toxicity using rats as the test subjects. The rats receiving C60 were each given a schedule of 1mg doses dissolved in extra virgin olive oil (1.7mg/kg body weight) over a 7 month period. The C60 was given into the stomach and the peritoneal cavity (abdominal cavity). The team concluded rats receiving C60 dissolved in olive oil did not suffer any acute or subacute signs of toxicity. There were also some surprising results which heralded a potentially huge break through for humankind.
